X-10 fun

Been using some of the X-10 stuff lately to control all the vampire electronics I have (no need for all the video game units, etc. to be running all the time - and being able to turn outlets/power strips on and off with my remote makes it worth the effort), and the new apartment has been driving me nuts. One of the controlled outlets would only work sometimes, and would just turn on and not off others. Finally traced it down this morning to the CFL light bulbs in the kitchen. 3 bulbs, 2 of one kind and one of another - when the 2 that are the same are both on, the X-10 outlet in the other room won't respond. Unscrew one of the CFLs, and the outlet works again!

I swear, if it's a weird problem I'll find or encounter it!

Movin' on Up....

Having to come up with about 3 months of increased rent in short notice has put a hamper on buying new stuff for the new place, but next month I'll hopefully be able to catch up some.

Considering how fast things have gone, and are going, I can't complain much (except for the heat/humidity levels the past 2 weeks that have been exhausting to work in). Just 2 weeks from the day my old landlord told me he needed the apartment back to the day I move into the new place. Bonus was getting the rent knocked down enough to cover the electric bill because of my old landlord's affiliation with the new one (living there for 16 years helped things out) - and my boss giving me a raise to help cover the increase in rent didn't hurt either!

Sometimes things seem to just work out :-)

Tag me out!

Apartment found, electric turned on, Cablevision scheduled to move my internet hookup, new landlord getting a FiOS DVR for me, and I'm exhausted already from packing/throwing out 16 years of accumulated crap..

Not a bad turn around considering it's only been 6 days since my landlord of the past 16 years told me he needed the apartment back. Amazing coincidence is that the first of only 2 responses I got to look at places this weekend was not only the one I ended up taking, but turned out to be a childhood friend of my landlord (they both got married together in Italy a few decades ago!). Having the endorsement of my soon to be ex-landlord gave me quite an edge with the new one, and the new place is so much better as well with more closet space than I have actual space now!

STATEN ISLAND, NY--Peter Steele, lead singer for Gothic metal band Type O Negative, is reported dead at the age of 48 due to heart failure.

Steele, who garnered fame for everything from faking his own death to posing fully nude in Playgirl, was known to live the life of a rock star, and reportedly struggled with substance abuse. But Staten Islanders who met him face to face said the dark-maned, brooding rock star was gentle and affable to his fans and his fellow musicians.

He was friggin huge and intimidating, but an awesome guy to hang out with after a Type O show (which now seems like more than a lifetime ago...)

DELRAN, N.J. – The Campbell Soup Co. executive who was behind the enduring brands SpaghettiOs and Chunky Soup has died.

Donald Goerke (GUHR'-kee) was 83. A Campbell spokesman confirmed that Goerke died of heart failure Sunday at his home in Delran in southern New Jersey.

Goerke was marketing research director of Campbell's Franco-American line in the early 1960s when his group started dreaming up pasta in shapes that would appeal to kids. He chose the o's. They were marketed with the unforgettable tagline, "Uh-oh, SpaghettiOs."

Later, he helped introduce Chunky Soup, a hearty ready-to-serve soup that stood out from the company's traditional line of condensed soups.

Time to get cooking

I'm well past my 30 days, so I guess I'm gonna have to live with my new HTC Rhodium (at&t's tilt2, known as the Touch Pro 2 on every other carrier).

Been checking out the custom ROM's on XDA and while most are great, they all have things I don't like about them. I think I'm gonna have to learn how to use a ROM Kitchen and cook myself up a good custom ROM for this phone. It's already radically different from stock, and running 2 interfaces simultaneously, so I might as well take the next logical step and try to brick it! :-p

The amount of information available in mind boggling, but with all the incredible software out there I'm hoping I can get rid of a ton of bloat and add in my programs without using up the precious device storage and make this thing run faster than the Millennium Falcon (yeah, I went there!).

It still pains me that HTC removed the D-Pad (and many other buttons) from there phones, and basically restricted the ability to use these phones with only one hand. If only there was a way to upgrade the hardware on my trusty old HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125)...

Still, if I'm gonna have to "live with" the best phone on the US market (until the HD2 comes out early next year), I might as well make it better than new :-)

(there's also talks of porting Android to the TP2 - that might be interesting to try as well...)

When, perpetually speaking, one of the most horrible cable companies in the country takes control of a media company who's reach and size rivals Disney, we all lose. Granted, NBC has done their best to kill sci-fi, they do have one of the best networks on TV (USA), and are partnered with the ratings goliath known as the WWE as well broadcasting the local NY MLB games.

I can't wait for Yankees games on an over-compressed Comcast feed, and knowing them they'd try to charge for watch extra innings....

Of course since I read it on Engadget, factual reliability is suspect as best.

From Girl's just wanna have fun, to the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, to the classic days of the former WWF, Capitan Lou said it best: "Often imitated, never duplicated,"

"One of the company's most popular and charismatic legends," the WWE said in a statement. "He will be greatly missed."

But Albano's success transcended the ring and catapulted the Captain into pop culture.

The band NRBQ paid homage with their song "Captain Lou," and he appeared in a number of "Miami Vice" episodes along with several films.

His biggest moment came when he teamed with Lauper for a string of videos in 1985, playing her father. The "Rock N Wrestling Connection" helped boost both Lauper's record sales and the WWE's ratings.

Paul, a guitar virtuoso, performed with some of early pop's biggest names and produced a slew of hits, many with wife Mary Ford. But it was his inventive streak that made him universally revered by guitar gods as their original ancestor and earned his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the most important forces in popular music.

"He actually taught himself to play guitar in order to demonstrate his electronic theories," said Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. "All of us owe an unimaginable debt to his work and his talent."
Paul, who died Thursday in White Plains, N.Y., of complications from pneumonia, was a tireless tinkerer, whose quest for a particular sound led him to create the first solid-body electric guitar.

New Star Trek = Win

If ever a franchise was in need of an overhaul, complete with fresh talent on both sides of the camera, I've been saying for over a decade that it was Star Trek.

Star Trek is quite literally among my earliest of memories - going back almost 35 years to when I was 2-3. The last few titles were, quite frankly, just not as fun as the original - nor as interesting as TNG. DS9 was very under-rated, but it just went downhill from there and the movies ended with a decent send off-of The Next Generation cast (thankfully we didn't have to suffer through a Voyager or Enterprise movie!).

It was nice to see the reigns handed over and while I had slight doubts at first, I made an effort to keep an open mind and hoped they made a damned good movie at the very least. I never expected it to actually be so seamlessly integrated with the established franchises, with the best mix of action and genuine laughs that made this film seem like it actually came right out the story-lines of the originals, while at the same time establishing the grounds to be able to move things around without fear of breaking the original franchises' established cannon.

J.J. - ya done good!

"Sylar" was better than you could have hoped as Spock, and Simon Pegg is just frelling scene-stealing every time he's on screen. I can't wait to see more from this cast.

The movie was a fitting send off to the The First Lady of Star Trek, and hearing Majel Barrett-Roddenberry's voice as the computer for the final time was actually comforting. She was proud with what they had done, and the franchise is in the hands of people that showed they have a great respect for established cannon, and were able to tweak it within it's own established mechanisms so that they could change the circumstances, but maintain the heart of famous characters we all know and love.

The future of Star Trek finally looks good, I hope they can keep it fresh for at least a few more movies - the franchise deserves it. (Lucas could really learn something from this...)

Sony buys Ghostbusters game from Atari
Sony Computer Entertainment has today announced that it has bought the upcoming Ghostbusters game from Atari, just one month before the game is set for release.

The game, which is scheduled to hit shelves on June 19th, will coincide with initial filming on a third film that is also being made by Sony. Sony, obviously eager to capitalise on the popularity of the franchise, has apparently decided to make the previously multi-platform game a PlayStation exclusive.

Ghostbusters: The Game will now ship as a PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 exclusive when it is released in June, with the exclusivity lasting for several months, after which a PlayStation Portable version will be released, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

It's unclear what will happen to the remaining versions of the game, most notably the Xbox 360 release, but early reports indicate that Atari will retain the rights to publish the game on that platform at some point.
WTF????? In one move they fucked over the majority of the gaming community, and insured the game will not make nearly the amount of money it could have for them - Brilliant!

I'm almost mad enough to kick my new Sony HDTV! Almost.

<cough>Firefly<cough>Lone Gunmen<cough>
Now let's hear some good news about Dollhouse people...

SETI@home chasing ET for 10 years

SETI@home completes a decade of ET search
The SETI@home project, which has involved the worldwide public in a search for radio-wave evidence of life outside Earth, marks its 10th anniversary on May 17, 2009.

The project, based at the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, records and analyzes data from the world's largest radio telescope, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. The collected computing power of hundreds of thousands of volunteer PCs is used to search this data for narrow-band signals (similar to TV or cell-phone transmissions) and other types of signals of possible extraterrestrial origin.

SETI@home was conceived in 1995. Development began in 1998, with initial funding from The Planetary Society and Paramount Pictures. It was publicly launched on May 17, 1999, and the number of volunteers quickly grew to about one million.
